Kenya
Located 215km southeast of Nairobi and about 4 hours away while driving, Crowned by Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, the Amboseli National Parks is one of Kenya's most popular parks. The name "Amboseli" comes from a Maasai word meaning "salty dust", and it is one of the best places in Africa to view large herds of elephants up close. Nature lovers can explore five different habitats here ranging from the dried-up bed of Lake Amboseli, wetlands with sulphur springs, the savannah and woodlands. They can also visit the local Maasai community who live around the park and experience their authentic culture.
Although Amboseli National Park can be visited at any time of year, it is best to go in the dry months which have little to no rainfall (June to October and January to February), as these months are the best for general wildlife viewing. Views of Kilimanjaro are often obscured by clouds, but chances are best in the early morning and late afternoon during the Wet season (November to May), when the sky is clear of dust.
The Amboseli National Park is home to large herds of Elephants that can be easily seen walking around the park. Other animal species that are found in the park are the lions, leopards and buffaloes also termed as the African big five.
There are over 40 different species of antelopes in the Amboseli National Park. These animals are also known to migrate in large numbers, other wildlife in the park include wildbeests, zebras, foxes, giraffes, hyenas, wild dogs, dik-dik, crocodile, hyrax among others.
